The UEFA Euro™ 2016 was the 15th edition of the UEFA European Championship, and the first to feature an expanded field of 24 teams instead of the previous 16. France hosted the tournament across 10 stadiums in 10 cities, running from June 10th through to the Final on July 10th at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
Portugal claimed the trophy for the first time in their history, defeating the hosts France 1–0 in the Final thanks to an extra-time goal from Éder, despite Cristiano Ronaldo going off injured early. It was a result that surprised almost everyone — but that is exactly what makes tournament football so compelling.
